San Francisco Chronicle: Top 100 Wines of 2014 (Jon Bonne)

2013 Massican Sauvignon: Dan Petroski gets attention for this label inspired by the wines of Friuli. But Sauvignon is a Friulian grape, too, and with this vintage what has been Petroski’s second-fiddle wine becomes one of the best Napa specimens you’ll find. With a classic pungency – cucumber, marjoram and shishito – paired with an intense blast of sweet lime and ripe, figgy fruit, it exudes sunshine, with a plush, almost sweet countenance. Yet it’s not creamy or overwrought; instead, it shows the mineral Sauvignon purity that also marks exceptional Loire versions.
