International Wine Report: 2014 Reviews

2014 Annia: 92 points. The ‘Annia’ from Massican is a blend of 45% Tocai friulano, 32% Chardonnay and 23% Ribolla Gialla. As this opens in the glass it offers an expressive nose of ripe apple, Asian pear, tangerine, fresh mineral, followed by hints of fennel, lemon, honey and floral notes. It has great texture and balance across the palate, coupled with vibrant acidity on the finish. This is a very impressive blend from winemaker Dan Petroski that is showing excellent today. (Best 2015-2020)

2014 Gemina: 93 points. The 2014 Massican Gemina from winemaker Dan Petroski is a fantastic blend of 71% Greco, 29% Pinot Grigio. The aromas jump from the glass, with lots of tropical fruit, green apple, lime peel, followed by hints of grapefruit, fennel and white flowers. On the palate this wine is racy, with lots of bright citrus, crisp orchard fruit and stony mineral. It all leads into the long, vibrant finish. (Best 2015-2020)

2014 Hyde: 92 points. The 2014 Chardonnay from Massican comes from the esteemed Hyde Vineyard in the Napa Valley. The vineyard is over 30 years old and home to some of the finest Chardonnay in Napa. As this slowly unwinds in the glass it begins to reveal notes of white orchard fruits, Meyer lemon, yellow plum, orange peel, followed by flinty mineral, and chalk. The lovely aromas are followed by a zesty infusion of citrus, guava, and a hint of grapefruit. Overall this is a very balanced and precise white, with lots of elegance. This continues to open up with each second of air and should continue to develop with some additional time in bottle. (Best 2016-2022)

2014 Sauvignon: 93 points. The Massican Sauvignon is a fantastic showing in 2014. The fruit comes from the Juliana Vineyard, located in one of Napa’s warmest microclimates. It delivers complex aromas of white peach, guava, grapefruit, Asian pear, orange blossom, followed by hints of smoke, hazelnut, and slate. A gorgeous, textured Sauvignon, that stands out for its exceptional balance, finesse and tightly wound core. The finish is explosive with lots of pure fruit and balanced out by its vibrant acidity and minerality. This is a Sauvignon that is showing well now with air, but will peak in another year or so. (Best 2015-2020)
